Diana Henry, MS, OTR/L, FAOTA introduces Sensory Processing Tools to improve behavior in children who struggle behaviorally and emotionally.

Imagine wearing a piece of sandpaper down the back of your shirt… or trying to sit still in a lecture when the air conditioner sounds like fingers scraping down a blackboard… or trying to walk across a room during an earthquake. Unfortunately this is not a make-believe game, but an ‘all-too-real’ daily situation for thousands of children with sensory integration dysfunction, also known as sensory processing disorder.

It is estimated that 1 in 20 children are affected by sensory integration dysfunction, and life may be miserable -- and is often overwhelming. These children are inundated with sensory information all day and their inability to effectively process the information can lead to developmental delays and even difficulty with the most common daily living skills such as sitting, concentrating, bathing, dressing and playing.

Life Skills 4 Kids (www.lifeskills4kids.com.au) is dedicated to providing evidence based tools and practical resources for parents, teachers, and therapists to help them teach children with sensory processing disorder. And now, we are proud to promote an upcoming workshop series by Diana Henry.

Diana Henry, SCSIT and SIPT certified and co-author of the Sensory Processing Measure (SPM), has been internationally recognized for her outstanding accomplishments in the field of sensory integration. She will deliver her highly acclaimed hands-on workshop series in Australia in Sydney (December 1 – 4) and Melbourne (December 8 – 11). She will focus on sensory integration and sensory processing strategies to enhance the environment to alleviate sensory-based concerns. Her proven techniques to create a “sensory safe” environment are based on evidence-based practice and education, as are the Life Skills 4 Kids resources.

Ms. Henry describes in her Tools for Tots book that children with sensory processing challenges may be “cautious, touchy, overly sensitive to sounds, fumbling, busy bees, spirited, or sluggish.” She will introduce practical sensory tools and has authored many books to improve a child’s ability to function during the day and live a better quality of life. She will provide techniques to teach children to concentrate in class, sit, listen, eat, trim their nails, brush their teeth, dress, brush their hair and prepare for bedtime – and many more tasks that children are expected to do every day.

The benefits of her workshops for parents, teachers, and therapists to help them teach children to better adapt and cope are incredible. But the benefits derived from the workshops for children will be life-changing and enormous.
